eGovernment Domain

Government technology ecosystems around the world are continually evolving to meet the demand for unprecedented levels of openness in government by stakeholders, access to personalised public services over mobile devices, deeper engagement of citizens and businesses in government decision-making over both traditional and new channels, and greater preparedness for black swan events like natural disasters or the global financial crisis.

Given the future scenario of lean governments with significantly less resources, the success of next-generation government organisations in meeting these challenges largely depends on their ability to effectively collaborate among themselves and with external entities like citizens, civil society and businesses by leveraging new networked and collaboration technologies such as those related to the Social Semantic Web and Linked Data. This unit will undertake research and develop policy frameworks to support governments on the use of Semantic Web, Linked Data and other DERI technologies for co-delivery of public services, publication and management of Linked Open Government Data, empowerment of citizens in decision making, optimizing administrative and business processes and opening up government as a single Networked Knowledge Enterprise.

European Commission Launch Public Consultation on Semantic Interoperability Vocabularies

The European Commission’s ISA programme, led by DERI’s former eGovernment Unit Leader Dr. Vassilios Peristeras, has defined a set of common Core Vocabularies , which will facilitate the provision of cross-border and cross-sector eGovernment services. These Core Vocabularies are simplified, reusable, and extensible data models that capture the fundamental characteristics of an entity in a context-neutral way. The current specification contains three core vocabularies describing business, location and person.
