Summary: 
Pergamon combines lightweight semantic technologies and social networking with conventional learning management features to delivers an innovative learning management system (LMS) for informal and collaborative eLearning. It is an extremely flexible data model, with support for hierarchical, collaborative and semantic meta data.

Problem Description: 
Studies have shown that at least 80% of the learning people do in their jobs is informal . And yet, the e‐learning industry’s focus to‐date has been directed towards providing formal training courses & tools.
Many of these first‐generation e‐learning initiatives have been unsuccessful. A research study by the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) found that two‐thirds of employees offered voluntary e‐learning never bothered to register. One third didn’t even register for compulsory elearning. Many of those who did register, dropped out early. The main reason given was that the employees didn’t have time for courses any more.
Informal learning is not new, but it is only now that organisations are beginning to realise how technology can help.

Pergamon combines lightweight semantic technologies and social networking with conventional learning management features to delivers an innovative learning management system (LMS) for informal and collaborative eLearning.
It takes a practical middle ground in the semantic spectrum for structuring data and includes support for:
  • Folksonomies (used for collaboratively creating and managing tags to annotate and categorize content)
  • Taxonomies (used to support entity recognition and to arrange data in hierarchical structures)
  • Ontologies (used to interconnect people, content and interactions)
