At Insight Centre for Data Analytics @ NUIG Galway we are looking for talents for covering the multiple research activities and aspects in the areas of Semantic Interoperability, Data Management and Processing, Privacy and Security, Internet of Things, Distributed Services and Systems and Cloud Computing Services & Management within the research groups and the broad portfolio of European collaborative and Irish national projects.

About the Opportunities

The rapid evolution of Sensor Technologies, the Semantic Web consolidation and the extensive deployment of Cloud Computing Systems provide the unique opportunity to unify the real and the virtual worlds (Internet of Things). Internet of Things enables the building of very large infrastructures that for the first time facilitate the information-driven real-time integration of the physical world and computers on a global scale (connecting sensor with the web). At the same time IoT can be considered a flexible middleware technology that abstracts from heterogeneous sensor network technologies to higher-level functionalities to enable interconnected sensor networks and processing of sensor data (Sensor Internet), It is a cornerstone for enabling Semantic Reality. The sheer size of those systems pose novel and unique challenges, as it can only be engineered and deployed if a large degree of self-organisation and automation capabilities are being built into the system and its constituents, enabling simple deployment (plug-and-play), dynamic (re-) configuration, flexible component and information integration, and tailored information delivery based on user context and needs in a service-oriented way. This requires semantic descriptions of the user needs and contexts, and of the system's constituents, the data streams they produce, their functionalities and their requirements to enable a machine-understandable information space of real-world entities and their dynamic communication processes on a scale that is beyond the current size of the Internet.

We investigate the convergence of software systems, the semantic web and the Internet, heavily focused on the evolution of sensor technologies and the semantic technologies to unify the real and the virtual worlds. 

We focus on developing flexible IoT middleware technology which abstracts data from heterogeneous sensor networks and bring this to a higher application-level(s) for enabling extended systems’ functionalities and also enable interconnected sensor networks and sensor web data interoperability by using the Internet. We extensively work on large-scale deployments, big sensor data collection and annotation and investigate data transformation and processing by means of advance stream processing techniques. We also work on the design principles for device and infrastructure-related architectures, technologies and protocol frameworks for Internet connected heterogeneous devices.

Post Doctorate Researcher - PostDoc (6-12 Months)

Research Master  (12 Months) /  Internships (4-6 Months Max.)

Thesis Background:

The evolution of the Internet of Things is hampered for the multi-domain interactions and the exchange of information, Interoperability and control at different levels in the IoT stack is still under investigation. Privacy and security is also a requirement to guarantee the connection of Internet of Things and the Web. Project like VITAL are looking at Virtual Interfaces to solve such demand for interoperability and federated control (www.vital-ict.eu).

1. Deployment and configuration of Multi-Query Data Test Services in Federated Cloud Environments (VITAL project www.vital-iot.eu).

As an approach enabling dynamic IoT services configuration, VITAL project focus on integrating / federating data across different cloud platforms, in order to test scalability and robustness to satisfy Data Services demand, these service deployment and configuration can be seen as a trivial method but in practice is not mainly due the technological implications and the nature of heterogeneous cloud infrastructure. Federated environments arise as an approach for the diversity of cloud environments. 

This master thesis objective implies experimental test, deployment set up and configuration, of VITAL project components into federated cloud environments.

 

Thesis Background:

In the IoT domain there is an increasing demand for IoT Data dynamic services composition by means of information interoperability and automated data management. An innovative approach for this challenge is OpenIoT project (www.openiot.eu), where by using Linked Data and cloud-based query processing, autonomic data management and information interoperability is enabled, OpenIoT offers on-the-fly service composition by following utility-based methods.

2. Evaluation of the capacity for solving multiple queries for the IoT Cloud Data Services by using Continue Query Language Algorithms.

OpenIoT is by design a multi-platform and distributed framework, that funds its core operation on transforming IoT collected data into information by means of semantic annotations (linked-data) and structured data repositories (RDF triple stores), the core methodology of OpenIoT to resolve a service request is by using query-answers paradigm on stored data sets. The functionality of executing queries on real time IoT Cloud data (IoT data streams) is considered as relevant and an innovative added value capacity for solving in shorter time and as consequence make the query-based information systems more efficient.

This thesis objective requires the set up and configuration of OpenIoT components and the evaluation of one of various Continue Query Language Algorithm(s).

PhD Position – Research Assistant

PhD - Scholarship stipend 19,000 per annum, no tax is applicable

Areas: Cloud Services Management, Stream Data Processing, Data Analytics

 

Interdisciplinary professionals are required to be successful in the joint space where Semantic Web, Big Data and Cloud Computing converge, a paradigm shift is required from current batch-like approaches towards Cloud Service Management / Federation with strong influence in privacy and security.

Despite the work carried over in Complex Event Processing, some more investigation is needed to provide near real-time Decision Making based on Event Data Analysis and Processing and results of stream processing and Event Detections for decision support.

The candidate will be encouraged and guided to explore and design new scalable stream processing methods that can use or exhibit real time events management and continuous query capabilities for detecting relevant (unexpected) events for streaming data, and suggesting appropriate adaptations of the decision support process. User-centric factors such as handling user requirements, preferences, social media profile and previous application usage patterns are also in scope for finding innovative solutions for “Self-Organizing Architectures for Cloud by means of Infrastructure Performance and Event Data”

 

The duration of the contract will be 3 years as a fully funded PhD.

Research Fellow (12-36 Months)

 

Insight Galway (former DERI) has a successful history of engaging in the physical world with the Semantic Web Domain in topics like the impact of semantics. This is an open opportunity to play a strong leadership role in the Insight Centre for Data Analytics Galway. This position offer to the appointed candidate the possibility to managing pan-European scientific projects alike directing post-doctoral and postgraduate researchers focusing on topics but not limited to Semantic Web, Cyber-Physical Systems, Cloud Computing, privacy and security and Internet of Things. If you have leadership attitude, you are enthusiast with ambition to lead research teams (scientific and technical people) this position will put you in contact with experts in the research areas associated to the projects. The successful candidate will be expected to perform a leading role in conducting excellent research activities, compete successfully for national and international research funding and develop national and international collaborations with academia and industry, alike participate in standardization and education activities as well as support Unit leader(s) and the Insight Galway directorship with administrative and institute development tasks. The appointed candidate is expected to act as thesis advisor for PhD and Master students and to act as the principal scientific contributor on a number of Insight Galway projects.

 

Contract duration: 12 Months minimum, starting immediately (probatory period is required) Salary scale: 41,000-52,000 Euro per annum depending on proven expertise and skills. This position is subject to Irish taxation.
